A Birth Center Birth — Indiana Birth Photographer

Colleen found me after through images of a mutual friend’s birth that I photographed a few years back. I love how through sharing birth images, other people can find the beauty in their own future births, and desire to have theirs documented too!

Because Colleen is also a doula, our initial meeting at her home was brief. Typically I sit down with potential clients and explain the process of birth photography in certain settings…but because she was seasoned in attending births herself, that part was left to skim over. She had made up her mind that she definitely wanted me to photograph this baby’s birth. And I personally couldn’t wait for her birth center birth!

It was late one evening when I got the call that things for Colleen’s birth were picking up. I grabbed my gear and raced to Sacred Roots Birth Center. Immediately I was greeted by Colleen, her husband Adam, her two sons, and her doula in the Family Room. It was great seeing them all convene and gather around Colleen through contractions, and embrace her with hugs and kisses in between. Soon, things were slowing down and she was able to rest for the remainder of the night. I was in and out of sleep on the Family Room couch, and about around sunrise, I went home to get a bit of breakfast and rest as well. A few hours later, Colleen made the call to have me come back. Things were picking up! So I raced back to the Birth Center. Colleen got into the birth tub and labored on and on. We listened to music as her husband and doula sent words of encouragement and empowerment to her with every wave. Her contractions were coming back to back! Her sons came in to say hello after a good night’s rest for them, as well. Seeing them come encourage their Mom was a wonderful sight. Soon, baby Asher began crowning and his powerful Mama pushed him Earthside and brought him to her chest.

Soon after, they were skin-to-skin and relaxing in their birthing suite for the next few hours before heading home. The boys came back in to meet their newest sibling, while Colleen was fed some delicious breakfast by Adam. All was well <3 Check out their birth images below!
